- Also,
print out two copies of the four forms on this site (Guidelines,
Policies, Application and Pastor Referral) for each person in
your group. Fill them out and mail one copy of each and a copy
of your passport to Trenia
Oliver, Secretary/Treasurer, 7934 Hwy 81, Phil Campbell, Ala.
35581.
- Next,
you'll need to start fund raising for your trip. You can send
a letter to friends and family, business associates and other
people you know asking for sponsorship. You can also speak at
your church or other churches to raise money. You'll need to
raise the cost of your airline tickets, which vary depending
on departure site from $600 to $1,000 each. Also how soon or late
you buy them can affect price, so get them early. You'll also
need $20 per person for each day you stay at the mission. This
will cover your room and board. If a large group is coming and
the mission has not yet fixed their bus or purchased a new one,
you'll need to add a rental cost for a van.
- About
6 weeks before your trip you'll need to have a group meeting
with either Brother William Borden or Brother Danny Watkins
to go over your plans and progress, get your questions answered
and so forth.
- You'll
need to see an infectious disease or travel doctor. It is recommended
that you have the Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccinations,
as well as a tetanus shot (the health dept. can give tetanus
shots cheap). You're
immune for a short term after your first Hepatitis shots, but it is best
if you have the whole series before you come. You'll also need
the Typhoid immunization. You can choose either the pills or
the shot. The pills give you immunity for five years; the shot
for three. You'll also need Malaria pills. These you
take once a week beginning the week before you come and continuing
for four weeks after you return to the U.S.
- So,
once you've got your tickets and raised your money, you'll need
to send Trenia the amount for a van if a rental is needed and
the amounts for the $20 per day per person three weeks before
you come so we can get the money to Honduras, rent the van and
have everything ready for your trip.
- Now
all you need to do is start packing and collect the items you
are going to bring: supplies for the mission and what you're
going to be doing. If you can, plan on leaving as much stuff behind
as you can. For example, leave your shampoo, Tylenol, bug spray,
etc. as a blessing to the mission. This helps a great deal.
- You
won't need to worry about any money in Honduras except what
you might want to buy to bring home. Everything there will be
taken care of. We will try to spend one day shopping in the
Valley of the Angels so you can buy things to bring home. The
Valley of Angels is a little artists' village in the mountains.
You can get blankets, pottery, jewelry, etc. Don't exchange
your money into lempiras before you come or at the airport.
We will take you to the bank where you will get a fair exchange
rate. And when it is time to go home, if you have extra lempiras,
think about leaving them with the mission as a blessing. Everything
helps, even if it's only a couple of dollars or half a bottle
of shampoo.
- If
there is anyone who requires a special diet or has serious allergies,
please let us know ahead of time. That way
we can be sure not to serve you something that might be harmful
to you. There will be plenty to eat, fresh vegetables and fruits,
and plenty of safe water will be provided for you.
- Before
you leave Honduras to return to the U.S., please have your team
leader write a report of your trip for us to use in reporting
to our sponsors and for our Web site. If you have digital cameras,
please forward a copy of your photos to Brother Danny or Brother
William for use on
the Web site and in literature. People like to read reports
of what's going on and see pictures. It helps the ministry with
accountability and fundraising for future programs and groups.
