Stories

On September 18, 2004, the first lady of Honduras and many guests came to Jimmy Hughes' children's home for the official inauguration ceremony.

Television media filmed the event. A new porch railing was built on the home and the staff painted lovely flowers and flower boxes on the posts.

We praise God for the blessings and provision for JImmy Hughes' children's home. Your prayers and support are needed to help us continue to serve as a supportive ministry. Some of the children's stories are below.

The children:

Their stories:

Byron is 2-years-old. His grandmother and four aunts all died in front  of him - murdered by gang members. His mother survived by playing dead among the bodies and blood. He has been abandoned at the children's home.

Rony, 7, and his sister Jackie, 4, witnessed the killing of their mother and then they were stabbed and left for dead. Rony survived 17 stab wounds. Jacquie's head was split open when they threw her to the ground like a rag doll.

Orlen, 14, suffered grade three malnutrition when he was six. He is the size of an 8-year-old child. His mother died of AIDS. He slept with his dead mother for two weeks because he feared being taken away. His heart is damaged and he flew to New York on Jan. 23 for open-heart surgery.

Luis Fernando, 7, was abandoned at the hospital by his mother or grandmother when they discovered he had cancer. He has been through chemotherapy to eliminate the tumor at the back of his neck in the cervical vertebrae. He also was diagnosed with hyperactivity.

Yuli, 6 (above left), Jose, 7 (above right), and Evelyn, 8 (left). Gang members murdered their mother and they have a brother in the youth prison run by Jimmy Hughes Ministries.

Fabiola, 13, left, and Cecia, 4, right, came to the children's home during July 2004. Their father is in Jimmy Hughes' rehab.

Photos not available yet for some of the following new children:

September 2004:
A 12-year-old girl and her brother Oscar, 5, above left, and sister Mayra, 9, escaped an abusive father. The 12-year-old was raped by her father at 11 and gave birth to Keilin, 1, above right, whom they took with them. A week before they arrived at the children's home, the 12-year-old committed suicide. Jimmy Hughes could not keep Keilin because she had serious medical issues. But, Oscar, 5, and Mayra, 9, are still there.

October 2004:
Manuel, 14, and Samuel, 18 months, left, came to live at the home. Manuel is living at the rehab.

December 5, 2004:
Byron, 4, and Axel, 12, came today. Their mother is a gang member and has been in prison for the last three years. They were found living by themselves and not going to school. They were barely eating and Byron is sick. Byron's heart is pumping blood into one of his lungs. Surgery to repair his heart is not possible. He needs a heart and 1-lung transplant. We are praying that God will meet his needs, and/or heal him. Because blood is in his lungs, he is at risk of contracting tuberculosis.

December 2004:
Sometime during this month, Shirley, 14, arrived and she is staying at the rehab. She is 3 months pregnant. She had a gang boyfriend, whose brother was the head of the 18th Street gang. Her deaf mother was murdered and her father is living in the U.S. She was found living with her grandmother.

December 22, 2004:
Karina arrived at the children's home. Karina is a 2-year-old with the body of a 6-month-old. Karina couldn't move because of her malnutrition, but after a week of good food, love and stimulation, she has begun to crawl. As of Jan. 12, she wants to walk and Jessica has to get her a walker.

December 29, 2004:
Helen arrived at the children's home. She is 16 or 17 and is the older sister of Axel, 12, and Byron, 4, who arrived December 5. They hadn't seen each other in years and are the second set of siblings reunited at the home since April. Helen is staying at the children's home and is helping with the children.

December 31, 2004:
Jimmy picked up Vilma, 13-years-old, and her baby, Katerine, 3 months old. We don't know their story yet, but they will e-mail that information soon.
